RSC and Molydyn on Sustainable Composites

The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) has just published their report on the important role chemistry has to play in composite materials - with Molydyn included as a case study. Alongside leading players in the materials industry, the case study highlights the role simulation has to play in the rapid discovery of new polymer materials. We discuss the challenges chemists face when including simulation in their work, the difficulty of getting lab space, and the need to bring computational chemistry to the next generation of chemistry students.

The composites industry is worth £4.0 billion to the UK economy and is essential to achieving the UK’s net zero commitments by 2050. The report covers how 95% of composite materials are made from fossil fuels, and only 15% of composites are sent for recycling. These statistics have to be improved, with new chemical research being the best tool to make this happen.

By developing polymers that infuse fibres easily, cure at low temperatures, and are manufactured from bio-based feedstocks we can drive a sustainable composites industry.
